Sponges can reproduce asexually by fragmentation. If part of the sponge is broken off, the fragment can grow independently into a new organism.

Sponges can also reproduce sexually. They are hermaphrodites, so each adult can produce eggs or sperm. The sponge will release sperm (seen above) and the water currents will take the sperm until it reaches another sponge of the same species. After fertilization, the larva is released into the water.
